Like many of his
famous Australian predecessors, Anthony West cut his teeth
racing dirt-track from a young age. By the time he was 15 he
had two national titles under his belt and was ready to take
his first steps into road racing - making his debut in
Japan's 80cc Bronze Cup series at Suzuka in 1997
In 1998 he won the Australian 250 production title, finished
3rd in the Australian 125cc Championship, and qualified for
the Australian Grand Prix, a huge effort which saw him
crowned Australian-based Rider of the Year. The following
season he was recruited by the Shell Advance Honda team to
ride an NSR250, and in his first full season in World
Championship competition he broke into the top-10 eight
times and racked up a total of 66 points - finishing 12th
overall. West continued with the Shell Advance Honda team in
2000 and continued his rapid development with a 6th placed
overall finish |
A move up to the
500cc class followed, before a year away from Grand Prix
racing in 2002. Upon his return to the 250 class in 2003 on
an Aprilia, West secured his first World Championship win as
a total of four podiums placed him seventh in the final
standings
In 2004 West continued on an Aprilia with the Freesoul
Abruzzo Racing Team, and the next season he led the KTM
project but only rode seven races – a podium at Donington
one of them. One more full season was to follow in the
quarter-litre class as in 2006 he finished 11th with private
Aprilia team Kiefer-Bos-Racing
Starting the 2007 season in the
250cc category with Matteoni Racing, West joined the premier
class midway through the campaign when he stepped up to
replace Olivier Jacque in the ranks of Kawasaki Racing. The
Australian adapted to the Ninja ZX-RR seamlessly as he
improved his results race upon race in the first four
outings, with a best finish of seventh at both Laguna Seca
and in Japan, finishing 15th overall having raced 11 times.
West continued with the team in 2008 but was unable to match
his previous season’s achievement, with a best-placed finish
of fifth at Brno, and 2009 was spent away from the World
Championship
Initially named as a reserve
entry for the inaugural 2010 Moto2 season, West was
confirmed as a permanent entrant before the final pre-season
Test at Jerez. He rides with MZ Racing in the new
intermediate class this year, having impressed in the Tests
in the lead-up to the start of the campaign (www.motogp.com/en/riders/profiles/Anthony+West) |
